Technical Description- LAN
Computer Network is of three types. They are; 1) LAN 2) WAN and 3) MAN. LAN stands for Local Area Network. It is a computer network which covers a small geographic area. It can cover a home, office or, group of buildings. Today, LANs are most probable to be founded on switched IEEE 802.3 Ethernet technology, which runs at 10, 100 or 1000Mb per second, or on IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi technology. Each computer or node in the LAN has its own power for computing. Adding to that, it can also access the other devices connected with the LAN. These can include processing power, data and the capability of chatting or communicating with other users connected with the network. LANs has some exclusive features, compared to Wide Area Networks (WAN), it supports much faster data transmission rates, lesser geographic area and lacking the need for chartered telecommunication wires.
Though, controlled Ethernet is now-a-days, the most widespread data link layer protocol of the OSI 7 Layer Model and as a network protocol, Internet Protocol (IP). Various diverse alternatives have been implemented and, some of them are continuing to be accepted in niche areas. Comparatively smaller LANs comprise of some switches, which are linked with each other and, one of them is linked with a DSL modem, Cable modem or a Router. A conventional replica of distribution, core switches and access; which was popularized thanks to, CISCO systems and now, it is being used for many years. Comparatively bigger LANs are distinguished by the distribution of Ethernet traffic roles inside the network. Each and every layer combines the traffic of the preceding layer. They naturally manage unnecessary switched links which are able to serve quality service and, spanning tree protocol. These switches help to recover failed uplinks ad, prevent loops. LANs can connect with other LANs with the help of leased lines and routers. Conventionally, a network which links more than one LANs is also referred as WAN (Wide Area Network). In the recent past, Internet Service Providers (ISP) have started provide extra services to connect LANs with each other. These services, such as, MPLS/ VPN services and Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) have broadened the horizons of the standard model of interrelating sites. There are also some methods which are developed to connect LANs together through using VPN hardware or software, Internet Connections and tunneling across the web using VPN technologies. Protocols, Topology and Media ( the cables, such as, radio waves or CAT5 that link machines in the LAN) are the features that distinguish LANs. With the explosion of Information Technology (IT) devices and computers in the contemporary home has come the everyday implementation of LANs to link them with one another. Many of these home networks are wireless also which uses the 802.11g/b wireless standard.
These LANs are used by broadband suppliers to form broadband connection. For example, in United Kingdom, UK Broadband Limited uses LAN of 802.11g/b wireless standard to provide wireless internet. Due to the excessive usage of LAN, the world has become a global family.
