VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is also called IP Telephony, Broadband Telephony and Voice over Broadband, Internet Telephony and Broadband Phone. It is basically the voice conversation routing over any IP-based network or Internet. Companies providing VoIP service are usually referred to as supplier and protocols, which are mainly use to send voice signals are generally referred to as VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocols. There are two PSTNs to VoIP technology. They are access numbers and DID, which stands for Direct Inward Dialing. DID connect the caller straightforwardly to the other VoIP user and access numbers are very similar to local calls. It is generally charged as a local call charge while, DID requires a monthly a monthly charge. There are some DIDs that are free of monthly charge but, require charge to call other.
Popularity of this VoIP technology is growing every moment. As a result, a lot of PSTN users are switching to VoIP, governments are also becoming more eager to regulate VoIP similar to legal PSTN services. In the United States, all the VoIP operators who do not support Enhanced 911 to fasten a sticker caution that conventional 911 services are not present, are required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Recently, the FCC started to require CALEA wiretap functionality supported VoIP operators. Addition of more conventional PSTN rules was proposed by the 2005 Telecommunications Act, for example, universal service fees and local number portability. Some other potential authorized issues are expected to include regulations against network neutrality and wiretapping. Some Caribbean and Latin American countries, worried about the telephone services owned by their state, have imposed constraints on the VoIP usage, which also include Panama, where this service is taxed. In Ethiopia, where government monopolizes entire telecommunication service, it is a crime to offer VoIP services there. There certain firewalls are set up to bar internet calls using VoIP technology. These steps were taken after the income generated from government Telecommunication Company was shortened by the growing reputation of VoIP service. In the European Union (EU), the decision regarding the conduct of VoIP service supplier depends on the national telecom controller for each member state. But, it must abide by the competition rules and regulation to define national telecommunication markets. VoIP service is a possible replacement for PSTN services when it functions over unmanaged telecommunication network. Using VoIP technology in India is legal, but to have VoIP gateways inside the country is against the law. It is completely illegal to use any VoIP service in the UAE. Only the government registered providers are allowed to proffer VoIP services in the Republic of Korea. In United Kingdom, it is authorized to offer VoIP services to the customers for the broadband suppliers. For example, UK Broadband offers cheap broadband including these facilities such as, VoIP service. In Bangladesh, it was previously legal to use VoIP technology, but now, it is strictly prohibited. As the fame of VoIP technology is increasing every moment, these obligations are about to be lifted.
