Ethernet Hub
Units those pass data in a computer network are identified as Computer Network Devices. These devices are termed as Network Equipment as well, Inter Working Unit (IWU) or Intermediate System (IS). Units those receive or generate data are called data terminal equipments or hosts. Some Common basic network tools are Gateway, Router, Bridge, Switch, Hub, Repeater etc.
An Ethernet Hub, which is called concentrator as well, is an equipment which connects more than one fiber optic Ethernet tools or twisted pair together and makes them perform as one device. Hubs work at 1st layer, which is called the physical layer as well, of OSI model. Thus, this device is a form of multi-port repeater. This device also performs jam signal forwarding to all the ports if it finds any collision. An Ethernet Network with hub, behaves like as a shared medium. Only, this device is able to transmit data successfully at the same time. Every host is in charge of crash revealing and for transmitting it again. An Ethernet hub, also called a repeater, is a quite unrefined broadcast tool. These do not direct any traffic that passes across them. Any of the packets goes through any port is detected on every other port. As every packet data is sent to all other ports, packet clash takes place which hinders the smooth traffic flow to a great extent. The necessity of hosts to be capable of detecting collisions bounds the quantity of hubs and also the entire network size. Such as, for 10Mbps networks, 5 segments or 4 hubs can be placed between two stations; for 100Mbps networks, up to 2 segments or 3 hubs between two stations. Purchasing hubs instead of switches was because of its less cost used to happen before. Now, it is purchased because of some other effective reasons such as, it can be used by every user, it receives all the traffic, it is easier to configure etc. As a result, hub usage is increasing everyday.
